How to get your Shopify store recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants

The short answer: AI assistants recommend products they can read, trust and compare. For a Shopify store, that means letting the assistants' search bots in, making sure product information is in the page itself rather than loaded by JavaScript, completing your structured data, policies and product descriptions, and keeping Shopify's agentic sales channels switched on. Most of it is setup you do once.

Shoppers already ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity what to buy. Shopify's own figures show AI-referred orders to Shopify stores grew nearly 13 times year on year in early 2026, and that AI-referred visits starting on a product page convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search (Shopify, May 2026). From a small base, but growing fast.

This guide covers the store side: your Shopify settings, your theme and your product data. It's the part that lives in your store, and the part most brands haven't checked.

How do AI assistants find products?

There are three main routes, and a store needs to work for all of them:

  • Their own search index. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity run search crawlers that read your pages. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google's normal search index, and Microsoft Copilot uses Bing's.
  • Live visits. When someone asks about your product, the assistant may fetch your page there and then.
  • Product catalogues. Shopify shares store catalogues with AI channels including ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot through what it calls Agentic Storefronts.

OpenAI says ChatGPT shows products when it judges them relevant to what the person asked, and may weigh price, reviews and ease of use, using structured information such as price and description. In practice, the store with clear, complete, consistent information gets quoted. The store with a 20-word description and reviews hidden inside a widget doesn't.

1. Let the right bots in

AI companies run different bots for different jobs, and they're worth treating differently. Answer bots decide whether you can appear in AI answers. Training bots collect content to train future models.

Bot What it does If you block it
OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI) Builds ChatGPT's search index You won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers
Claude-SearchBot (Anthropic) Builds Claude's search index Lower visibility in Claude's answers
PerplexityBot Builds Perplexity's search index Lower visibility in Perplexity
Googlebot, Bingbot Normal search, which also feeds AI Overviews, AI Mode and Copilot You disappear from search altogether
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot (OpenAI, Anthropic, Common Crawl) Collect content for model training Your content isn't used for training. It doesn't remove you from answers
Google-Extended A setting, not a bot. Controls use for Gemini training No effect on Google Search

Blocking training bots is a brand decision, not a mistake. Blocking answer bots is almost always a mistake for a store that wants to be recommended.

The good news: Shopify's default robots.txt doesn't block any of them. The problem is stores whose theme has an older, customised robots.txt.liquid with rules typed in by hand. Those files don't pick up Shopify's improvements, and some still block your policy pages. Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and look for any User-agent lines naming the bots above, or a Disallow: /policies/ line. If your domain runs through your own Cloudflare account, check its AI bot settings too, because they can block bots that robots.txt allows.

2. Know what Shopify already does for you

Since May 2026, every Shopify store serves a file at /agents.md, and /llms.txt shows the same content by default (Shopify changelog). It tells AI agents how to search your catalogue and start a checkout that the shopper has to approve. Stores also now publish a Universal Commerce Protocol endpoint that agents use to read products and build carts. You don't need to install anything for this.

Do you need to write your own llms.txt? Probably not. Google says its search doesn't use these files, and none of the other major AI companies has said its crawlers rely on them. Don't pay for an app to create one. If you want to customise Shopify's version, you can add a templates/llms.txt.liquid file to your theme with a short summary of your brand, your main collections and links to your policies, but it's a low priority next to everything below.

3. Put product information in the page, not behind JavaScript

Most AI crawlers read the raw HTML of a page and don't run JavaScript. A study by Vercel and MERJ found none of the major AI crawlers, including OpenAI's and Anthropic's, rendered JavaScript (Vercel, 2024). Anything an app loads after the page appears, such as review widgets, tabbed descriptions, size guides or ingredient lists, may be invisible to them.

Test it yourself. Open a product page, view the page source (Ctrl+U on Windows, Option+Cmd+U on a Mac), and search for a sentence from your description tab and a phrase from one of your reviews. If you can't find them in the source, most AI crawlers can't either. The fix is usually a setting in the app to render server-side, or moving the content into the theme using metafields.

4. Complete your structured data

Structured data is the machine-readable version of your product page: name, price, availability, brand, ratings. Shopify themes output the basics automatically. The common gaps are:

  • Ratings. Your review app holds the stars, but they're often added by JavaScript or not added at all. Most review apps have an option to output rating data in the theme. Switch it on.
  • Barcodes. Fill in the barcode (GTIN) field on each product so assistants can match your product across retailers and comparisons.
  • Brand. An empty vendor field can leave the brand blank in your structured data.
  • Shipping and returns. Delivery costs, delivery times and returns terms can be published as structured data. Assistants increasingly quote them.
  • Your organisation. Organisation data with links to your Instagram, TikTok, Trustpilot and other profiles helps assistants confirm which brand you are.

Paste a product URL into the Schema Markup Validator to see exactly what's there. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features, but complete structured data means every assistant reads the same price, stock and rating you show customers.

5. Write product descriptions an assistant can quote

AI assistants answer questions like "which protein bar has no sweeteners?" or "is this deodorant safe for sensitive skin?" from the words on your product page. If your description is two lines of brand copy, there's nothing to quote and a competitor with clearer copy gets the mention. The same detail helps people who land on the page, which we cover in how to optimise your Shopify product pages. A description that works for customers and assistants covers:

  • what it is, in plain words
  • who it's for, and who it isn't for
  • what's in it or what it's made of
  • how to use it, with sizes, quantities or dosage
  • for subscriptions: how often it ships, the price per delivery, and whether customers can skip, swap or cancel

That last point matters for subscription brands. "Can I cancel anytime?" is one of the most common questions people ask before subscribing. If the answer is only in your terms and conditions, an assistant will either guess or say it doesn't know.

6. Answer pre-purchase questions on your site

Fill in every policy in Settings → Policies: refunds, shipping, privacy, terms and, if you sell subscriptions, your subscription policy. Assistants use them to answer "what's their returns policy?", and Shopify requires completed policies for some AI channels. Then add an FAQ page that answers the real questions your customer service team gets, in plain language. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in its search listings in 2026, so do this for your customers and for assistants looking for a clear answer to quote.

7. Selling inside AI assistants: what's live in the UK

Shopify's Agentic Storefronts make your catalogue available to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's AI. You'll find them under Sales channels → Agentic in your Shopify admin, and they're on by default for eligible stores.

At the time of writing, in October 2026, buying inside these assistants is mostly limited to US shoppers. Shopify's ChatGPT channel requires that you sell to customers in the US, and Google's checkout in AI Mode is live in the US, rolling out to Canada and Australia, with the UK to follow. For most UK brands, the job today is to be discoverable and ready: products, policies and structured data in order, and the Agentic channel left on, so you're in place when checkout inside assistants reaches UK shoppers.

8. Measure it

AI traffic is still hard to measure precisely, but you can see more than you could a year ago:

  • Google Analytics 4 added an AI Assistant channel in May 2026 that groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini. It isn't backdated.
  • ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows, so check your Shopify analytics and GA4 for that source.
  • Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools now both report how often your pages appear in their AI answers.

Expect some AI visits to show up as direct traffic, especially from the mobile apps.

We check all of this for Shopify brands, from robots files and structured data to the product pages that assistants quote, and give you the fixes as named Shopify settings or code you can paste. It sits alongside our conversion work, because the pages assistants send people to still have to convert. Want us to look at yours? Let's talk.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my Shopify store to show up in ChatGPT?

Make sure OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked in your robots.txt, keep product descriptions and reviews in the page's HTML, complete your structured data and policies, and leave Shopify's Agentic sales channel switched on. ChatGPT favours products with clear, complete and consistent information.

Does Shopify block AI bots by default?

No. Shopify's default robots.txt allows AI crawlers. Stores can still block them through a customised robots.txt.liquid file in the theme, or through their own Cloudflare settings, so check yours at yourstore.com/robots.txt.

Should I block GPTBot on my Shopify store?

That's a brand choice. GPTBot collects content for training OpenAI's models. Blocking it doesn't remove you from ChatGPT's answers, which rely on OAI-SearchBot. Never block OAI-SearchBot if you want ChatGPT to recommend your products.

Do I need an llms.txt file for my Shopify store?

No. Shopify now serves llms.txt and agents.md on every store automatically. Google says it doesn't use llms.txt, and no other major AI company has said it relies on it, so it's a low priority compared with product data and structured data.

Can UK customers buy my products inside ChatGPT?

Not yet, as of October 2026. Buying inside ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode is limited to US shoppers for now, with other countries following. UK shoppers can still discover your products in AI answers and click through to buy on your store.

How do I track traffic from ChatGPT on Shopify?

Look for visits with the source chatgpt.com in Shopify analytics, and use the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4. Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and show up as direct traffic, so treat the numbers as a minimum.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

Complete structured data helps assistants read your price, stock, ratings and policies accurately. Google says its AI features don't need special markup, but product, review, shipping and returns data still make your information consistent wherever it's read.
