Why you should audit your Shopify theme
A store can look great while old app code, duplicate tools and unnecessary downloads make it slower and harder to maintain. Your team may not notice because their browser has already saved the files. New customers don’t have that head start.
We look behind the pages to find what is still useful, what can go and what could work better. An audit can uncover worthwhile improvements even after speed or accessibility work. You don’t need to know what is wrong before getting in touch.
What will we check?
- Apps and tracking. Are tools doing the same job? Is code from a deleted app still loading? Anything we’re unsure about goes on a list for your team to confirm.
- Unnecessary code. We check repeated downloads, unused snippets and JavaScript or styling files loading where they aren’t needed. A file simply sitting unused in the theme isn’t automatically slowing it down.
- Images, video and fonts. Is a phone downloading the desktop image too? Are oversized files making customers wait?
- Hidden errors. We investigate failed requests and what happens when a connected service is slow or unavailable.
- Different markets. Where included, we compare country storefronts so a good UK experience doesn’t hide a problem elsewhere.
- Everyday updates. Can your team change content, images and offers in the theme editor?
- Ongoing checks. We identify useful Shopify updates and monitoring to catch problems after future changes.
We agree the scope with you and build on existing audits, so you’re not paying to repeat the same investigation.
One useful feature. Six copies of the same code.
A customer sees one carousel. Behind the page, several sections each load the same tool again.
Before: six separate copies
New visits download the same tool repeatedly.
After: one shared copy
The feature stays. Unnecessary loading goes.
Can your team make updates without a developer?
A banner, button or offer may be written directly into the code. We can identify missing settings and recommend adding controls to Shopify’s theme editor, so your team can make routine changes when needed.
If we build those controls, we’ll show you how to use them. More involved changes may still need our help. Shopify explains sections and blocks here.
Why keep an eye on Shopify and app changes?
Shopify and app providers replace older features over time. “Deprecated” means something is being phased out. We check whether a change affects your setup and what needs doing, rather than assume you need a rebuild.
For example, Shopify recommends render instead of the older include instruction in theme code. See its developer guidance and theme update advice.
Uninstalling an app can also leave code behind. We check what is still used before removing anything, including tracking your marketing team relies on.
Which audit is right for your store?
A theme audit looks at how your store is built, maintained and used. A site speed audit focuses on loading and delays. An accessibility audit looks at the barriers that can prevent people using your store. We’ll help you choose where to start and avoid repeating work you’ve already paid for.
What could your audit uncover?
The same carousel code downloads six times
The store looks normal, but several page sections each bring their own copy of the same carousel tool. A new customer downloads more code than they need before they can use the page comfortably. Your team may not notice it because those files are already saved in their browser.
Our recommendation: share one copy, load it only on pages that need it and check every affected carousel. Less unnecessary work can help customers browse and convert with fewer delays.
Example data. We agree the work for your store before making changes.
What will your report show?
- 01What we foundEvidence of each issue and why it matters to customers or your team.
- 02What we recommendPriorities, time estimates, checks and anything your team needs to confirm.
- 03What happens nextA practical plan for individual fixes and ongoing checks. We can work through it with you.
How do we choose what comes first?
We prioritise problems that can stop customers converting, affect lots of visits or make your team’s work harder. You’ll see what deserves attention now and what can wait.
New apps and campaigns can bring problems back. We can include follow up checks in your retainer or discuss a separate quarterly support package. You don’t need a retainer to book the audit or fixes.
Can you help with our Shopify setup?
We work with Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus stores, and can discuss a focused review for Starter. We also support headless stores, including Hydrogen, where the customer website is built separately from a Shopify theme. We adapt the checks to your setup.

A few questions you might have
Our store looks fine. Is an audit still useful?
It can be. Duplicate tools, unnecessary downloads and old templates often sit behind a page that looks perfectly normal. We’ll help you decide whether a closer look is worthwhile.
We’ve already had a speed audit. Will this repeat it?
We’ll review what has already been done and agree what is still useful to investigate. A theme audit can look more widely at maintainability, hidden errors and making updates easier for your team.
Can you review a store another developer built?
Yes. We can work with your existing theme or discuss a custom storefront, including Hydrogen. We’ll agree access and what the review covers first.
Will you change our live store during the audit?
No. The audit identifies opportunities. Any changes are agreed separately, with time to test them before they go live.
Will we need a new theme?
Not necessarily. Targeted improvements may be enough. If a bigger change is worth considering, we’ll explain the options and why.
Do we need a retainer for the fixes?
No. You can book a specific piece of work, use your own developer or ask us about ongoing support. We’ll confirm timing and what is involved before you decide.
